Local stocks closed on a strong note, NIFTY up 1.66%

The key domestic indices finished sharply higher. Nifty Private Bank, Nifty IT and Nifty Auto shares advanced, while Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Media shares fell.

As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, jumped 1533.72 points or 2.11% to 74,315.61. The Nifty 50 index registered sharp gains of 374.65 points or 1.66% to 22,997.35. In the past three trading sessions, the Nifty and Sensex rallied by 2.83% and 3.32%, respectively.

The broader market underperformed the frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index posted modest losses of 0.48% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index declined 1.04%.

The market breadth was weak. On the BSE, 2104 shares rose and 3161 shares retreated. A total of 190 shares were unchanged.

HDFC Bank Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 373.65 lakh shares and posted a sharp rise of 64.69% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has drifted lower by around 0.82% in last one-month and has slumped 27.27% over last one year.

Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 327.11 lakh shares and recorded a sharp increase of 26.36% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has rallied 6.89% in last one-month and has gained modestly 1.79% over last one year.

Index action

The Nifty Private Bank index gained 1.89% to 27679.3 today. The index is marginally higher by 0.19% in last one week and has moved higher by 0.36% over last one month. It edged lower by 1.91% in last one year. ICICI Bank Ltd (up 3.80%), HDFC Bank Ltd (up 2.27%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd (up 2.26%), IndusInd Bank Ltd (up 2.24%) and Axis Bank Ltd (up 1.85%) advanced.

The Nifty IT index rose by 1.82% to 30719.8 today. The index has jumped by 8.69% in last one week and has posted modest gains of 2.08% over last one month. It declined by 14.32% in last one year. Tech Mahindra Ltd (up 4.75%), HCL Technologies Ltd (up 2.49%), Infosys Ltd (up 2.02%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (up 1.96%) and Wipro Ltd (up 1.83%) jumped.

The Nifty PSU Bank index decreased by 1.55% to 8041.2 today. The index has gained modestly by 0.97% in last one week and has inched higher by 0.11% over last one month. It inched up by 7.52% in last one year. Canara Bank (down 6.12%), Bank of Maharashtra (down 3.54%), Bank of India (down 3.03%), Punjab National Bank (down 2.91%) and Indian Overseas Bank (down 1.82%) traded lower.

The Nifty Media index inched down by 1.47% to 1617.2 today. The index has rallied by 3.98% in last one week and has advanced 9.14% over last one month. It edged up by 6.08% in last one year. D B Corp Ltd (down 6.53%), Tips Music Ltd (down 4.71%), Sun TV Network Ltd (down 3.67%), Saregama India Ltd (down 3.52%) and Prime Focus Ltd (down 1.79%) declined.

The Nifty IT index rose for a third session in a row today. Tech Mahindra Ltd (up 4.75%), HCL Technologies Ltd (up 2.49%), Infosys Ltd (up 2.02%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (up 1.96%) and Wipro Ltd (up 1.83%) moved up.

Global Markets

European markets edged lower.

DOW futures are up by 0.19% today.

NIFTY50 futures closed with gains of 1.52% at 22993 and are in a discount of 4 points compared to NIFTY50.
