Local stocks ended slightly higher, NIFTY up 0.50%

The key domestic indices ended marginally higher. Nifty Metal, Nifty FMCG and Nifty PSU Bank shares gained, while Nifty IT and Nifty Media shares declined.

As per provisional closing data, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, moved higher by 299.17 points or 0.40% to 74,828.25. The Nifty 50 index added 117.80 points or 0.50% to 23,446.80.

The broader market underperformed the frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index edged higher by 0.63% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index posted modest gains of 0.65%.

The market breadth was well-supported. On the BSE, 3331 shares advanced and 1941 shares retreated. A total of 191 shares were unchanged.

Tata Steel Ltd was the top traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 397.98 lakh shares and registered a sharp increase of 62.22% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock is down around 0.71% in last one-month and has posted strong gains of 7.92% over last one year.

HDFC Bank Ltd was the second highest traded stock in NIFTY50 index today, recording a quantity of 231.97 lakh shares and recorded a sharp decline of 33.65% compared to last one-week’s average daily volume. The stock has moved higher 1.32% in last one-month and has fallen sharply 23.40% over last one year.

Index action

The Nifty Metal index climbed by 2.40% to 13302.35 today. The index has climbed by 2.54% in last one week and has eased by 2.92% over last one month. It has rallied by 29.53% in last one year. Steel Authority of India Ltd (up 6.57%), National Aluminium Company Ltd (up 3.19%), Hindalco Industries Ltd (up 3.17%), Tata Steel Ltd (up 3.16%) and Vedanta Ltd (up 3.04%) moved higher.

The Nifty FMCG index advanced slightly by 1.32% to 46259.35 today. The index is higher by 1.85% in last one week and has slipped by 3.93% over last one month. It is sharply lower by around 18.48% in last one year. Radico Khaitan Ltd (up 3.44%), United Spirits Ltd (up 3.08%), United Breweries Ltd (up 2.23%), Nestle India Ltd (up 1.71%) and ITC Ltd (up 1.64%) went up.

The Nifty IT index slipped by 0.87% to 28334.05 today. The index has dropped sharply by 3.29% in last one week and has lost 6.58% over last one month. It dropped sharply by 19.49% in last one year. Persistent Systems Ltd (down 2.35%), LTM Ltd (down 1.76%), Oracle Financial Services Software Ltd (down 1.27%), Coforge Ltd (down 1.14%) and HCL Technologies Ltd (down 1.08%) retreated.

The Nifty Media index edged lower by 0.50% to 1566.85 today. The index is sharply higher by 4.71% in last one week and has inched lower by 1.78% over last one month. It is down around 3.23% in last one year. Prime Focus Ltd (down 5.68%), PVR Inox Ltd (down 1.30%), Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (down 1.19%) and D B Corp Ltd (down 0.45%) dropped.

The Nifty Realty index rose for a third session in a row today. Anant Raj Ltd (up 3.56%), Phoenix Mills Ltd (up 2.04%), Lodha Developers Ltd (up 1.62%), Sobha Ltd (up 1.05%) and DLF Ltd (up 0.82%) gained.

Global Markets

European markets showed a slight decline.

DOW futures are lower by 0.16% today.

MCX Crude oil futures are trading a little higher by 1.41% at Rs 8576.0 per barrel.

NIFTY50 futures closed with a modest gain of 0.26% at 23455 and are in a premium of 8 points compared to NIFTY50.
